Charles Carroll Gates is the only son of Thomas Gates, and the father of John Adams Gates.

Biography[]

Charles Gates was born around 1856 to his father Thomas Gates. He spends time with his father Thomas Gates in the Harbach Tavern playing with his tools. When two men approach them, Charles stands up and starts walking away, but overhears his father mentioning Playfair Cipher. Charles asks what that is, but Thomas has no time to answer. Charles lets his father work and moves around the tavern, but gets curious and peaks on what his father is up to. He notices the man who came with the cipher pull a gun on Thomas, and when Thomas tosses some pages in the fire, Charles sees his father being shot. Charles runs to his father, and the man threatens even him, but decides not to shoot. Thomas is dying right before Charles, and says his last words to him: "The debt that all men pay".
