Emily Appleton Gates is the ex-wife of Patrick Henry Gates, whom she divorced in 1975 (the cause of the divorce was because one of them had to grown up in her own words), and the mother of Ben Franklin Gates. She met Patrick as a teaching assistant when he was also a college history professor. She did not see him again until 2007.
She apparently studies Indian languages and can decipher the wooden maps found in the resolute desks. She is a Professor at the University of Maryland. Mitchell Wilkenson forces her to go to Mount Rushmore so that the City of Gold can be found.
