Mustafa Azemmouri, also known as Estevanico, Estebanico, Esteban de Dorantes, and Esteban the Moor. Mustafa Azemmouri was sold to a Spanish nobleman in Spain in about 1521, and taken in 1527 on the Spanish Narváez expedition and given a slave-name Estevanico.[1]

Biography[]

The Narváez expedition crashed on the shores of Florida, and only four men survived, Estevanico being one of them. Estevanico saved the life of a dying chief of a local tribe, and he was shown Cíbola as a reward. Estevanico later tried to find the city again, but was unable to. His stories became legend, and it grew starting a gold hunt for the fables City of Gold.[2]
