Forever Free is book by Catherine Hapka in the "Gates Family Mystery Series" first planned for a April 28, 2009 release by Disney Press[1], but seemingly published in April 1, 2012[2].
Synopsis[]
In the late 1800s, the North defeated the South in the Civil War, Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, and America found herself in the middle of the reconstruction era. This brought prosperity, joy, and equality to many of the freed slaves. But for others, the past is too haunting to forget.
Maryland. 1872. After the death of his father, Charles Gates wants nothing more than to turn his back on his family's never-ending quest for treasure. But then he meets Daniel, a young freed slave who needs his help. Now, along with Daniel, Charles sets off on a journey to uncover a treasure that civil rights figures like Frederick Douglass, Harriet Beecher Stowe, and Sojourner Truth fought to protect, never lose, and keep...forever free[3].
